Fresh from a comfortable midweek 3-0 victory over LA Galaxy, Vancouver Whitecaps return to MLS action when they welcome Austin FC to BC Place for their first meeting of the season.

The midweek demolition means that the Whitecaps remain top of the Western Conference, safe in the knowledge that eight victories from the final 10 games would be sufficient to secure top seed in the West for the playoffs. However, with tricky trips to LAFC and Chicago Fire still to come in the middle of October, Vancouver have little room to relax as they look to secure home advantage throughout the playoffs.

Last time Austin travelled to British Columbia, Brian White ran riot as he fired four into the Verde net, setting his side en route to a thumping 5-1 victory. That was a visiting team who in early 2025 were competing with the Whitecaps near the summit of the Western Conference before ultimately finishing in sixth, but since then they have slumped down the standings and now find themselves down in 14^th in the table.

White will be hoping to replicate the trick and move closer to the top of the Golden Boot standings, but he will be backed by the embarrassment of riches that form Vancouver’s attacking supporting cast. Thomas Müller may have had to go off injured early in the Galaxy game and will not be available, but Ryan Gauld, Emmanuel Sabbi and Bruno Caicedo (who has achieved international acclaim after his unorthodox penalty finish) have all stepped up to the mantle and been much improved in recent weeks. Adding in the options of Chiekh Sabaly, Rayan Elloumi and new signing Yadaly Diaby and you have a front three that scares any defence, let alone one of the leakiest in the league.

Even though they face a critical Canadian Championship semi-final second leg in midweek against CF Montreal with the scores ties 1-1, the rest of the team picks itself with Jesper Sørensen knowing how vitally important every game is if Vancouver are to end the year at the summit of the Western Conference.

Austin are also a side who it could be perilous to underestimate. Although neither Brandon Vazquez nor Facundo Torres have set the world alight this season, both players have strong MLS pedigree, and Vancouver will need to be wary of their talents.

One player who Vancouver would have known about is Jayden Nelson, with the forward, who left in the offseason, poised to make his return to BC Place before he instead completed a summer transfer to EFL Championship side Bolton Wanderers. While it’s a shame that we can’t see Nelson in action again in Vancouver, it really bugs me that in MLS teams play each other twice within one portion of the season and not near the halfway. I would love if it someone could explain the rationale behind playing Portland Timbers on matchdays three and six, but then neither St Louis SC nor Austin FC at all until the final third.

Anyway, rant over. Whitecaps have had mixed records with Texas sides travelling north of the border in recent weeks, as Houston Dynamo sealed a 1-0 victory before Dallas were dispatched 5-0. However, this is a Whitecaps team returning to form, and even though Austin are unbeaten in their last five MLS games, I cannot see that streak extending at BC Place.
