Good Monday morning Caps fans. Hope your August is off to a good start and you are enjoying the long weekend and BC Day.
It wasn’t a win but a 1-1 draw with LAFC to head into the Leagues Cup break isn’t a bad result. The 40,000-plus at BC Place were treated to a game where the Caps repeatedly did everything but score and LAFC did everything but attack (aside from their one goal). In the end, the honors were shared.
This team will need to be more clinical but this was the best they’ve looked after the World Cup break. There has also been a lot of upheaval between players returning from injury, other regulars getting hurt, and Seb Berhalter’s departure that must be factored in as well. Still, we’re at the point where a draw with LAFC is a bit disappointing and that in and of itself is a win.
Leagues Cup may actually wind up being a blessing in disguise, with two matches at BC Place against weaker Liga MX sides to gel and experiment with the lineup. Then, if advancement is potentially in the cards, they could go for it against Tigres. Otherwise, it’s a chance to play the kids.
The most exciting part of the week was definitely the rumors of tangible moves by an interested ownership group, reportedly featuring Arthur Griffiths. I would guess Griffiths isn’t the money guy, which is honestly a good thing. Having a respected local business leader front a group of people who can plunk down actual cash is the best of both worlds.
Obviously, we don’t yet know if this is a group that has legs, but it is encouraging that there is once again tangible interest from someone in buying the club. Axel Schuster’s comments last week were more measured, so nothing seems imminent. But it is certainly something worth watching and is more positive news after things looked so bleak earlier this year.
