Coffee with the Caps, Monday April 20

Good Monday morning Caps fans, hope it was a relaxing weekend and that the week ahead is a good one.

It was a businesslike performance from Vancouver on Friday night, who made no mistake in dispatching the Western Conference’s worst team, Sporting Kansas City.

As I wrote about on Friday, this was always the most likely outcome but I still always worry about these matchups. If you want to win a Supporters Shield, you need to avoid dropping points against bad teams. And, MLS being MLS, bad teams do sometimes get random results.

But not on Friday. Almost from the opening whistle, it was clear that SKC didn’t have the quality in the back or in the midfield to keep the Caps at bay for long. Emmanuel Sabbi more than atoned for a miss just minutes into the match with a fine performance, grabbing a goal and a very hard-won assist on Thomas Müller’s goal that made things 3-0.

Sabbi has struggled to find form this season and has looked like he’s just been trying too hard to make things happen. Well, that wasn’t a problem against SKC, as he looked consistently dangerous and also worked hard tracking back and in the press to cause a lot of headaches for the away side. This was his best performance of 2026 and Sabbi looked like he did at his peak last season.

For Bruno Caicedo, it was an excellent full debut. In a shade over 90 minutes of game time, Caicedo has a goal and an assist and while he is unlikely to keep that up, it is a sign of his ceiling. While most of the attacks went down the right hand side, Caicedo still looked dangerous when he got the ball. In an even more promising development, the Ecuadorian already seems to be building chemistry with his teammates and seems to have a clear idea of what Jesper Sorensen wants his wingers to do. At the moment, the winger slots seem to be these two players to lose. And that would help address one of the few areas of inconsistency the Caps have shown this season.

There is obviously little tactically to take from a match like Friday’s. But this is a team that continues to overflow with confidence and the vibes are running high. From three well taken goals to a debut for youngster Nikola Djordjevic, things couldn’t have gone much better over the weekend.

Shameless Self Promotion

While there might not be a lot of big takeaways from Friday, we do our best to recap things and deliver the report card grades.

Best of the Rest

I’ll have more thoughts on this Friday but the Southsiders have launched a valiant effort to #SaveTheCaps.

The Whitecaps 2 side collapsed late to drop their match against SKC’s reserves 3-2 on Sunday.

Welcome to MLS, a league where executives can successfully lobby for a visit from a certain team because of revenue goals or something.

The Canadian Women’s National Team dropped their FIFA Series friendly against Brazil 1-0 on Saturday.

Our thoughts are with Kyle Bekker, who recently shared that he has been diagnosed with testicular cancer.

  1. with all the wide players (in starting order- Caicedo, Sabbi, Sabaly, AZ and falling off the radar- Cabrera), one wonders if Kenji Cabrera will be around much longer- he is the only player i can think of who has had his play get worse- he looks lost and defeated

one wonders when and if and for how long Ryan Gauld will take to the pitch in 2026- if he comes back anywhere near his 2024 level, well what a bonus that will be for the Team and the supporters- his set of skills, soccer intelligence and leadership would add another layer to the Team – like the icing on a Team that is already one of the best in MLS

heading into a long road trip, this weekend’s game vs Colorado looms large– the Rapids will be hurting mad from letting Messi do his spectacular thing-the Caps gotta be THE BOSS
