Coffee with the Caps, Monday August 4

Good Monday morning Caps fans, happy August and hope your month and week are off to a good start.

We’ve yet to get official word that Thomas Muller is a Vancouver Whitecaps player but that hopefully will be coming sooner rather than later (I jinxed it happening Friday in my column last week).

Aside from that, no news is good news in Caps world. I’ve already caved and watched the latest iteration of Leagues Cup and while I’m immeasurably glad the Caps aren’t in it, it has been entertaining enough. The Seattle 7-0 win over Cruz Azul to exorcise the demons of the Caps’ CCC final defeat alone was reason enough to keep the competition around for another year.

In truth, the format is a bit silly. The number of dead rubber matches there will be in the final round (or even in the second) makes it hard to take seriously, even though there have been a number of highly entertaining matches. I do give MLS credit for engineering a way to maintain the one interesting part of the competition, which is seeing MLS and Liga. MX teams not typically in continental play face off. It makes for compelling viewing, even if it’s an imperfect measuring stick for comparing the two leagues.

The biggest benefit from a self interest standpoint, however, is that the format will lead to a number of midweek matches for possible Western Conference top dogs like Minnesota United. Will it matter much in the end? Possibly not — Vancouver does have Voyageurs Cup matches on the agenda. But the Caps have had worse fixture congestion than any non Club World Cup team. Might as well get everyone else caught up to where they’re at!

Shameless Self Promotion

Caleb dives into how the addition of Muller will actually look once it is all together on the pitch.

Best of the Rest

While Muller heads to Vancouver, Tottenham star Son Heung-Min will making the move to LAFC.

It is looking like an Alphonso Davies return at Bayern Munich isn’t too far off in the distance.

Well, at least the Caps won’t have to move for Supercross this year!

  1. in your article, i notice you have a pic of Ryan Gauld- r u giving us hope for 2025?

  2. Well we’re waiting in Vancouver-town
For a Munich jet to finally come down
It’s been in the news for one whole week
First it seemed daft, now we believe

So we’re waiting for the news to be good
But it’s taking longer than it should
    Regulations of the MLS
    DPs and TAM, discovery mess

    And we’re hoping in Vancouver-town

    Where the pessimism’s handed down
And it’s getting very hard to wa-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ait

    We’re projecting in Vancouver-town
Will the Ramdeuter fit in with our crowd?
What the hell is Axel waiting for?
    Give us some news! Waiting’s a bore…

And the trophies are still up on the wall
In MLS they never helped us at all
Older fans remember good old days
Willie and Ball, trophies to raise

We’re still waiting here in Vancouver-town

Now our rivals’ signings making us frown
And the wait is getting hard to ta-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ke

Every squad has had a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as last year’s Caps got
With every forward step we fall on our face
These days we’re always put right back in our place

    Well we’re waiting in Vancouver-town
But that airport welcome’s not goin’ down
    And my optimism’s gone awa-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-y

And it’s getting very hard to wa-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-it
    But we’re waiting in Vancouver-town

      1. Flowed fairly quickly once I got the idea. A lot of it is lifted nearly verbatim from the original and lyrics are easy to find online.

  3. whats interesting to me is that Axel Schuster and the Caps have not signed another player during the Transfer window- but we do have until August 21, so here’s hoping something significant happens, especially on defence with Ranko gone for the season (not sure that Utvik or Halbouni have enough sauce at CB to handle the second half of the season and playoffs)

and there even isnt any rumors!!
