Coffee with the Caps, Friday May 9

Good Friday morning Caps fans, hope you all are having a lovely week. It’s been a busy one in my neck of the woods so I’ll keep it short and sweet and get to the links ASAP.

This week has been a good one for tuning out from the Whitecaps as … their hasn’t been a ton of news. The Caps did get their May 31 match against Portland moved to make room for the CONCACAF Champions Cup final the next day. This wasn’t a surprise given the tight turnaround and hopefully will serve as a precursor to their home match against Minnesota United getting rearranged from the midweek.

MLS has thrown teams a bone from this perspective before and you would hope they would do so here. Sure, the Caps aren’t Miami but the Cinderella story would be great for the league, for soccer in Canada and also would be annoy every Liga MX fan to no end. Plenty of wins to go around here. Again, no reason to think this won’t happen but worth tracking as the weeks tick by before the final.

The even better news, however, was Transfermarkt reporting that the Caps are working on an improved deal for Pedro Vite, making him a max TAM player and keeping him in Vancouver past the end of his current deal later this year.

This confirms something Axel Schuster let slip on Soccerwise last month, with the Caps obviously motivated to retain Vite and the player perhaps wanting stability before the World Cup next year. Given that he plays regularly for Ecuador as is, why chance your spot by moving to Europe? In fact, from Vite’s perspective, a strong World Cup would help him earn an even better European move. Lots still to track here but this is clearly great news.

Shameless Self Promotion

OK at this point we all obviously were wrong about the Whitecaps. But Caleb breaks down where we all got off course before the season started.

Best of the Rest

EDIT: Was one round ahead of myself on the Voyageurs Cup!

A look at where the Caps’ hot start puts them in tier of MLS in the eyes of Matt Doyle.

A look at the Caps’ roster profile, which is largely unchanged since the last update aside from more GAM.

Vancouver Rise nabbed their first home win during the midweek.

Vancouver FC knocked out Pacific FC on penalties to advance in the Voyageurs Cup, keeping hopes of a derby alive later in the competition.
