Good Friday morning Caps fans, hope you all are having a lovely week and that you are ready for all the extra things you can do outside today on the longest day of the year.
After moaning on Monday about the need for new bodies in the summer, the transfer gods have given us a glimpse of a possible incoming. Tom Bogert reported that an MLS club is kicking the tires on Brighton midfielder Marc Leonard and other outlets have reported that the mystery team is Vancouver.
The rumored transfer fee is $610,000 — not much by MLS standards. And I would think this is teeing up one of the under-22 spots, assuming the deal ultimately gets done.
That is far from a done deal. Leonard excelled in League One last season, with five goals and six assists for Northampton Town. He was ultimately named player of the year for the Cobblers (cool nickname BTW).
Northampton Town’s manager waxed poetic about Leonard and said the 22-year-old was ready for a step up to the Championship, where there is seemingly interest. You would think the Caps could beat the possible wage offer from many Championship sides but it is entirely possible the Scot wants to stay in Europe rather than make a move to MLS (though the Caps do have another talented Scot to help mentor him).
This was not where I thought the Caps would make their first move to improve the roster — I frankly thought they’d try to add another attacking piece. But Leonard checks the boxes of another potential need: a deeper lying player who can still create (basically an Alessandro Schopf who doesn’t pass the ball backwards and who can chip in a couple more goals). Leonard’s track record with Northampton Town seems to check those boxes.
Whether that is the top priority or not, however, is a different question. Tying up another U-22 initiative spot isn’t a bad thing, as the Caps seem likely to take the route that will give them four of those spots to play with. Doing it at the same position as Pedro Vite, one of their other U-22 players, however, is an interesting move.
The Caps need bodies and this would help with that. I also think Leonard has an intriguing profile. But for a team that has a number of average or slightly above average midfielders (Andres Cubas notwithstanding), Leonard will need to come in and be very good immediately in order to help move the needle for this season, when the right signings would probably put the Caps in a position to be a contender. He could well do that and, again, the profile is intriguing. But if this is the extent of the summer transfer dealings, I’m not sure it will really be enough to dramatically alter this team’s fortunes.
Best of the Rest
Canada turned in another strong performance against Argentina but were ultimately picked apart by the defending champions 2-0.
Meanwhile, Canada Soccer says they are in contact with CONCACAF regarding racist comments online directed at a player. An awful way for the tournament to begin.
It didn’t mean much in the end but Ryan Gauld’s banger against New England was named goal of the week.
Xherdan Shaqiri became the first MLS player to score in the Euros … as he is on his way out of MLS.

Just a – POSSIBLY- better MF, BUT ANOTHER DECK CHAIR that won’t make any significant difference, much like Bovalina- a Whitecap special if it happens (wouldn’t he rather try for the English Championship?) haven’t we all learned not to get excited about any Whitecap player rumors ? If he does come, who is moving out?
The only way this team gets significantly better is Davies is sold to R M and the money coming in has to be used on acquiring players… But then you have the salary issue and thinking that owner, Greg Kerfoot, will spend is like wishing on a star…useless
We are what we always have been… A #8-11 team
