Match Preview: Texas Round Two

Vancouver Whitecaps look to restore their place atop the Western Conference when they welcome fellow Western Conference contenders FC Dallas to BC Place on Saturday night.

After seemingly turning a corner with a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders that secured a first win in eight, it was yet another disappointing result in midweek as Houston Dynamo made the long trip north and came away with both the three points and top spot in the West.

However, Vancouver have no time to wallow following that result, as they follow that up by welcoming a Dallas side who will be looking for revenge after being convincingly eliminated by the Whitecaps in the first round of the 2025 playoffs. They proved across the three fixtures at the back end of the year that they are no pushovers, while it took Sebastian Berhalter heroics for Vancouver to win this seasons return fixture back 3-2 in May.

For a change, we’ll start by looking at the visitors, and Dallas arrive at this fixture in fine form – sat fifth in the West having only lost once in MLS action since they returned. That sequence includes a strong 2-1 victory at Texas rivals Austin FC, before they beat Real Salt Lake 4-3 in a pulsating game thanks to Ran Binyamin’s first MLS goal in injury time.

Petar Musa is undoubtedly the dangerman, having notched his 15th and 16th league goals of the season in midweek to extend his lead atop the MLS Golden Boot charts and become the fastest FC Dallas player to bag 50 league goals for the club. However, Dallas are far from a one-man team, and their rugged defensive unit which frustrated BC Place on Decision Day last season will hope to pull off another result.

Turning back over to Vancouver then, and, after surrendering top spot in the Western Conference to an inform Houston team on Wednesday night, the Whitecaps will be desperate to return to winning ways.

The issue that has plagued Vancouver throughout this poor run is the inability to put the ball in the net. Houston may be in the midst of a sequence of five straight clean sheets, but, aside from a questionably disallowed goal, Vancouver only put one shot on target from 17 attempts and undershot their expected goals for the fourth game in a row.

That isn’t enough for an elite side to win football matches, and the Whitecaps will be hoping their forward line can rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Ryan Gauld and Thomas Müller have combined well in their first few appearances together to create those chances, but the duo have not yet been able to turn those into regular goals. The absences of Bruno Caicedo and Brian White only exacerbated the issue, but with Bruno returning to the team the burden may be lessened on the likes of Emmanuel Sabbi and Rayan Elloumi in their need to step up.

In terms of the rest of the team news, Jeevan Badwal remains out under concussion protocol after being forced off early on Sunday, while the long-term absentees of Ranko Veselinovic, Belal Halbouni and Kenji Cabrera will all still be unavailable. New signing Sebastian Ramirez joins Kwasi Poku and Aleksa Cvetkovic as arrivals to the squad, but none of the new players are likely to feature in this one.

With only a four-point gap between the sides, this match would be the perfect time for Vancouver to pick up a valuable momentum-boosting win that would create daylight between them and the chasing pack. But, for perhaps the first time in the Jesper Sørensen era, in terms of form, Vancouver are probably the underdogs.

Still, performances have suggested that a return to winning ways is inevitable when they remember where the net is, and I predict that that will happen in this match in front of a packed BC Place crowd.
