After a dominant display Saturday night at BC Place in a 3–0 win over Toronto FC, we take a look back at the individual performances in the latest Report Card.
Alright, let’s dive in.
Yohei Takaoka – 8.0
The Japanese keeper has been very lonely this season, without many opportunities to show off his skills. That being said, the reflex save he made in the second half of this one was impressive and prevented TFC from having any sniff of a comeback.
Édier Ocampo – 7.5
Sørensen has been leaning on Ocampo more and more to provide width to Vancouver’s attack, and that’s been working pretty well. This didn’t necessarily lead to a ton of final balls from the youngster, but he was in the right spaces.
Tristan Blackmon – 8.0
The reigning Defender of the Year is looking like himself again, covering a ton of ground and generally being a bully with aggressive defensive interventions, while also striding up the pitch when given the option.
Ralph Priso – 8.0
Ralph’s recovery on Richie Laryea had a lot of CanMNT fans talking. It’s getting to the point where Priso is a serious contender for a World Cup spot this summer, and rightfully so. His combination of passing, pace, and physicality really suits Vancouver’s play style. It was like the Whitecaps had two extra midfielders in this match, the way they used their CBs.
Mathías Laborda – 8.0
It’s easy to forget Mati was one of Vancouver’s best players at the end of last year. It was a great run and header that he won which led to Vancouver’s second goal, and with Toronto sitting so deep, he was pretty busy in possession too.
Andrés Cubas – 8.0
Vancouver’s midfield has been a brick wall so far this year, and Cubas is a big reason why. More of the same from him in this one: he had five tackles and won 7/9 ground duels.
Sebastian Berhalter – 8.0
Even if the young American’s open-play creation was a little less notable in this one, two set-piece goals are always a nice card to have up your sleeve. It was a perfectly executed play on the first set-piece goal, and although the second was a goalkeeping error, the ball was in a spot that made things challenging to defend.
Jeevan Badwal – 7.0
While not as dominant as he was midweek, Jeevan looks a lot more confident at the MLS level this year, and we are seeing some flair and attacking spark that were missing last season. I think it’s clear he’s more confident centrally, but he’s shown he can move out wide when needed. He’s also definitely learned to draw fouls from the school of Richie Laryea.
Thomas Müller – 8.5
Sometimes you want to see Thomas be more selfish in open play and take more speculative shots, because he does have that quality. Otherwise, though, what a weapon he is on set pieces and from the penalty spot, where those moments look so routine to him.
Aziel Jackson – 7.0
An understated match from AZ, but still a very good one, as he had Walker Zimmerman completely twisted in knots, leading to the early penalty kick. His side of the pitch was a little less busy in possession, with the Ocampo/Badwal/Berhalter combo doing a lot of that work.
Brian White – 7.0
White’s start to the season has not been great, but seeing him more involved in hold-up play was, to me, a great sign. That usually comes hand in hand with a hot streak. It would have been challenging to miss his goal, as the net was completely empty, but I still think that will do a lot for his confidence.
Subs – 7.0
Tate Johnson and JC Ngando both came off the bench and had a positive impact, leading to a couple of half-chances. Cheikh Sabaly made his Whitecaps debut and looked a little lost out there, but honestly, I’m surprised he got minutes so soon after joining the team. Rayan Elloumi and Oliver Larraz came on quite late, so there’s not much to say there.
Okay, those were my thoughts from the 3–0 win over TFC. Let me know yours in the comments, as always.

Brian looked pretty ecstatic after his goal, seemed to do wonders for his confidence
i really like what you said about Ralph Priso- i was super-surprised on his run-back to take away a TO break-away (he looks slow and yet… he isnt); and he plays smart- he truly has done a remarkable recovery of his career by himself and Jesper- definitely a WC possibility–
and Badwal being younger could be a Euro prospect if he continues with his play in MF- with Seba and cubas doing good things in MF, it meant that Jeevan got to do less
Thomas Muller- your quote- “Sometimes you want to see Thomas be more selfish in open play and take more speculative shots, because he does have that quality.” he has hit 3 posts on his speculative/instinctive shots, so he could be at 5 goals already – he looks positioned to be a terrific addition to the goals
and wasnt it nice to see White celebrate after his goal (it made me kind of forget his softy shot on a break-away)- i think that goal will ignite his goal production- thats just the way it is with strikers
and Takaoka’s rush from 1 side of the net to the opposite side and make that save was world class- worth the price of admission
best coaching combo in MLS- Jesper and Muller
