Good Monday morning, Caps fans. Hope you all are having a great start to your week and that your weekend was restful and enjoyable.
The past few days have been a whirlwind in Caps world, and there is much to talk about here. Let’s start with the rather alarming developments, under the theory that it’s better to get the bad news out of the way first.
Axel Schuster sent a refreshingly frank message to season ticket holders that shed some light on the negotiations over a BC Place lease. Simply put, things are not going well. The team is signaling that PavCo has made its best offer, but it is still not good enough. Schuster noted that the Caps have had no success in finding a buyer due to the club’s dismal finances (the worst in the league, apparently) and its lack of a clear stadium solution. The lease difficulties and scheduling conflicts from the World Cup appear to mean that at least some games will be played outside Vancouver (potentially Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup, and CONCACAF Champions Cup). Whether the remainder will be played at BC Place or another stadium site remains to be seen.
But the most striking part about Schuster’s letter and the corresponding press conference on Friday was his tone. This is the first time I’ve heard real concern and anxiety in his public comments about the team’s future. And while he signaled this was not the end, it is also the first time I’ve really started despairing about the potential way forward for this club.
Much like Axel, I’m refusing to give up hope, however. The prospect of playing at Hastings Park still exists, even if it is a theoretical one at this point. MLS would be penny-wise and pound-foolish to abandon Vancouver as a market if there is any hope of figuring out a stadium solution in the medium term future. Even if it means the league itself would need to own the team for a time, it would be worth it given the long-term gains that can be made.
I am primarily speaking from a financial perspective, because that’s what makes MLS tick. But is equally true from a fan culture perspective. This club already has some of the best fans in the league. What message would it send from the perspective of building soccer in Canada (which MLS has a vested interest in) to rip away one of North America’s most historic clubs because the rich and powerful people in a room couldn’t figure things out? How could the sport in Vancouver truly ever recover?
Maybe this is all a scare tactic to try to heap pressure on PavCo and other stakeholders. And I hope the negative press isn’t a distraction from what should be a season of excitement and anticipation, even though I know all of this can’t help but overshadow the action on the pitch. But the existential threat to the Whitecaps feels real in a way it didn’t before. The fans of Vancouver have been loyal to MLS. It’s time for the league and its owners to repay the favor by being patient and finding a real, durable solution that keeps this team where it should be.
Shameless Self Promotion

Best of the Rest
Friendly number two went better for the Caps, as they defeated Incheon United 1-0.
Belal Halbouni is officially back in Vancouver, in a move that made too much sense for everyone involved.
Vancouver is reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Senegalese winger/striker Cheikh Sabaly from Metz. More to come on this on Friday!
Could Cyle Larin be on the move on deadline day?

1. this is standard negotiating posturing between PAVCO/BC Government and the Whitecaps- the Club will already get $1.5 mill from the food and drink revenue and its happened in 1 month- more will be coming into their coffers
2. there are wealthy investors waiting in the wings- we have already been told there are multiple- once there is a resolve by the end of 2026 to the BC Place Stadium deal and what will be the future Whitecap home (Hastings Park North or BC Place Stadium, they will decide whether or not to invest in the Club- i think they will invest once they see a future value for their involvement- the major Cap owner is Greg Kerfoot and he has been committed to the Whitecaps for decades and he is staying involved- i have given him some stick in the past, but i am really pleased he is staying on)
