Coffee with the Caps, Monday December 29

Good Monday morning Caps fans. Hope you all are having a lovely start to your week and that you don’t have to work too hard in the last few days of 2025.

Indeed, this is the last column of the year, which is somewhat incredible to say. This has been the most tumultuous and, ultimately, joyous season since the Whitecaps joined MLS. It almost is difficult to remember back to March, when it started under a cloud of uncertainty amid reports the team would be sold and the firing of Vanni Sartini and, ultimately, hiring of Jesper Sorensen.

It ends with some uncertainty as well, given the ongoing stadium situation, but with more hope. This is the most market relevant the Caps have been since entering MLS and that has been reflected in the zeal to finding a permanent home, be that at BC Places or Hastings Park.

And in between we of course had the action on the pitch. Three finals, two incredible performances in Mexico, pastings of two of the best teams in the league, and a goal catalogue that will make choosing the goal of the season very difficult indeed. At the same time, Thomas Müller joined, Pedro Vite departed, and Ralph Priso became a centerback. The last of those things might be the most improbable of them all.

Thank you to all who followed this site in 2025. It has been one of our best years as well because of the outpouring of support and readership you all have given us. People clearly want to read about the Whitecaps and we are, as always, honored that you’d spend that time with us. Thanks for a 2025 to remember — and here’s to a 2026 that finds a way to somehow top it.

Best of the Rest

Canadian winger Jacob Shaffelburg is reportedly heading to LAFC.

John Herdman has a new gig in Indonesia. Yes, you read that correctly.

Ismael Kone could be the latest Canadian heading to Juventus.

A look at the best goals from around the league to round out 2025.

  1. Thanks to all the writers for all your work this year as well, and hope you have a happy new year, and here’s to an even better 2026!

  2. have the asked for a transfer?…..”will both Ahmed and Berhalter be traded to a Euro league on their request?”

  3. my questions for the Caps 2026 MLS season:

    1. can players who excelled more in 2025 than we thought was possible play to that level again? leading the pack is Ralph Priso and others such as Tate Johnson, Mathias Laborda, Seba Berhalter and Sabbi all raised their playing level

    2. can we avoid our 5 best CBs being injured at the same time?

    3. can Ryan Gauld return to his 2024 form and team-up with Thomas Muller?

    4. will both Ahmed and Berhalter be traded to a Euro league on their request? Andres Cubas to a South American league?

    5. will Kenji Cabrera become a regular starter

    6. what striker will Axel Schuster bring in to upgrade the squad ?

    7. can Jesper motivate the players like he did in 2025

    8. how will the Caps perform for the beginning of the season with so many road games?

    9. will 25K/game or more become the standard attendance?

  4. What a great year for reading your news!! THANK-YOU!

here are my speculations for 2026 and beyond:

    1. a new and better BC Place Stadium lease until 2029-2030- signed before the season starts in February

    2. a demolishing and cleaning up of the Hastings Park race track

    3. an unveiling of a new local and distant investor(s) to team up with the existing majority Cap owner, Greg Kerfoot and is now staying as an Owner, which will lead to

    4. a signed agreement between the Whitecaps and the City to lease for X? years the empty horse track land at Hastings Park- 30K stadium, hotel, businesses, casino with the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation- it might include more leased land like the Agrodome- (Canuck practice facility?) (10K Amphitheatre?) (?) its going to be MAGNIFICENT!

    5. the announcement of a new horse and harness facility in Langley at 80th Avenue and 216th, near Highway 1 (already offered and planned by the Township of Langley)

    6. announcement of a new IronWorkers Bridge that will include space for a new Skytrain link from Waterfront to Hastings Park and to the North Shore, ending at Lonsdale Quay (in the 2030’s a linking of Brentwood and Metrotown Skytrain to this new North Shore link)

and this is all being led by the Vancouver Whitecap owners/Axel Schuster, the City of Vancouver and the Provincial Government/PAVCO- quite amazing – the Whitecap badge will come alive again- mountains and water

Google- Langley land for horse and harness track; Skytrain expansion to the North Shore/linking of existing tracks; new IronWorkers Bridge; the leased land of the old horse track (its HUGE)
