Coffee with the Caps, Friday September 12

Good Friday morning Caps fans, hope you all are having a lovely week and that you have a well-earned rest coming up this weekend.

Well, the good news is that you won’t have to listen to me drone on about whatever subject I can come up with to write about twice a week for the last two weeks — the Whitecaps are back in action on Saturday.

It is a big match for the Caps, even beyond the fact that they will be taking on the shock Supporters Shield favorites, the Philadelphia Union. A win (or other results going Vancouver’s way) will see the Caps clinch a playoff spot — something that didn’t happen last year until the waning weeks of the season. And big turnarounds will be the theme on Saturday night.

A lot of people, myself included, weren’t even sure Philly would be making the playoffs this year, much less becoming an MLS Cup contender. Bradley Carnell is likely the Manager of the Year frontrunner and the symbiosis from Ernst Tanner on down to Carnell and his well assembled squad has made Philly a juggernaut, even though they haven’t splashed out on the elite attacking talent we typically see on top teams.

Pretty much all of that paragraph could be written about Vancouver. One of the truisms of MLS has always been that there are multiple ways to build a winning roster and these two teams are still proof that good coaching and player development still rules the day. The Leagues Cup final also teaches us this, provided you focus on the match rather than the brawl afterwards. And while there are plenty of needed changes in MLS, long live the days when Philadelphia and Vancouver can play a meaningful match in mid-September that will decide both of their respective conferences.

Best of the Rest

  1. Excuse me? I think we have a pretty strong candidate for coach of the year, considering that we’re like 40+ games in over three different competitions and we still aren’t sure we’ve seen our top eleven start. Despite all these lost games, we’re doing better than anyone expected.

  2. Concert lighting gear should scream scale.
If you’re doing gigs with 500+ heads, your lighting can’t feel small.
    I use:
    Intense RGBW washes
    Beams with multi-angle motion
    DMX control synced to BPM
You want that stadium feel, even in a mid-size venue.

Make it massive with solid concert lighting gear.

  3. I recently learned that the ticket purchase limits for the WC are PER HOUSEHOLD and not per person! I hope I am wrong, but this is according to someone who read the fine print, which was changed after Sept 10.

  4. regarding the draw for the FIFA WC tickets- people jammed the computer lines when it started the mad rush- it doesnt matter one iota whether you got in #1 or #10 000- you got in– and the 10 000 person might get tickets and the 1st person might not
