Coffee with the Caps, Friday August 15

Good Friday morning Caps fans, hope you are having a good week and that things are winding down for the weekend.

The first half of the week remained dominated by Tim Ford-gate, while the second half shifted to Thomas Mueller’s arrival in Vancouver, with a brief interlude for the Canadian Championship first leg in between.

Regarding Ford: PRO has seen the Instagram posts that we all have seen but all indications are he will remain a match official moving forward. While I never will not be fuming about Saturday, I’m ready to move on. I don’t want Ford to officiate Whitecaps games moving forward and that feels like an outcome that will make everyone happy. Beyond that, I’m increasingly ambivalent.

Moving on with things is easier, however, with the flood of content featuring Mueller’s arrival in town. All the stories about his easygoing demeanor seemed confirmed by videos of him with supporters at the airport and in town. The press blitz as part of his arrival came with news that the sale of the Caps might be more of a injection of cash with a new co-owner, rather than a full on changing of hands, as talks for a new stadium persist. That explains why Mueller’s signing came to pass. And while it is certainly thrilling to see Mueller in training, any sign that this is not a one-off but rather a sign of greater attention from ownership is an excellent one.

The Canadian Championship, meanwhile, was a bit of a mixed bag. This was one I was nervous about given Forge’s form as of late — despite the talent gap on paper, CPL sides always punch above their weight and that has obviously spelled danger in the past.

Well, the good news is the Caps mostly looked comfortable, particularly in the first half before Brian White had to be taken off with a knock. The bad news is the time they didn’t look comfortable involved two of the biggest defensive howlers you’ll ever seen from Bjorn Utvik (who, incidentally, is rumored to be returning to Norway). Now that Mueller is done, one imagines centerback is next on the shopping list for the final week of the transfer window, as you can’t have those types of mistakes in a playoff match. Otherwise, the Caps largely contained the danger from Forge, though the home side will likely complain about a penalty shout that went unanswered. But for the defensive errors, however, the Caps likely win this.

Instead they left themselves some work to do on the home leg. Crucially, however, Vancouver has a month to get healthy and rested. Once again the bench wasn’t very strong and a few more weeks should help considerably with that problem.

  1. the game on Sunday will add about

    7 000 fans x $60/ticket- $420 000 (Cap average attendace is around 20K-21K)

    the remaining 6 games x 3 000 more fans x $60= $1.08 mill

    total- $ 1.5 mill

    MLS takes 50%= $750K; Caps get #750K– Muller’s salary will be $670K

in other words, Muller’s presence will pay for or almost pay his salary this season, plus the Caps get World recognition, excites the fan base and promotes the new proposed Stadium with some new investors

  2. as for me, i think Utvik was a tremendous professional- he gave 100%, connected well with the Team, never complained and did the job on the field to the BEST OF HIS ABILITY- he did have some good games, but not last game unfortunately- i dont like the ‘mob’ mentality of some supporters- and if he does leave, i hope Bjorn gets a good gig in Norway and that he leaves the Caps feeling good about his experiences

since the MLS window for transfers is August 21, we can strongly surmise that a new and experienced upgrade will be made at CB and perhaps a left defender to challenge Johnson (who i think- for a rookie- has been terrific)- maybe its a free agent or 2??

the good news– this the most ambitious time for the Whitecaps since being in MLS- Axel and the owners (existing and possibly new ones) are aiming to make a difference in the play-offs THIS YEAR- that would certainly help the Stadium talks at Hastings Park, alongwith a proposed Skytrain nearby as it heads over to the North Shore which is a transportation goal for the City and Province

THE DOTS ARE LINING UP FOR SOME BIG AND POSITIVE NEWS BEFORE YEAR-END

the bad news- Jesper has stated that Ryan Gauld might not return this season- if true, then i have been right for a couple of months that the medical team got it wrong from the get-go- they tried rehabilitation, and i said it should have been surgery within the month of March/early April (still hoping to be wrong and Gauld plays alongside White and Muller this year)
