Match Preview: Whitecaps Welcome San Diego

After a weekend off, the Vancouver Whitecaps return to action on Wednesday night as they host MLS newcomers San Diego FC in a key clash at the top of the Western Conference.

Firstly, as we enter the second half of the season, I feel it’s apt timing to quickly reflect on the 2025 campaign so far. Despite being put up for sale and losing Designated Player Stuart Armstrong in the offseason, Vancouver have been in scintillating form under Jesper Sørensen. From commanding victories against Seattle and Portland in the Cascadian Cup, to the demolition of Austin, and then the battering of Inter Miami en route to the Champions Cup Final, the Whitecaps have been in superb so far this season, and hopefully they continue to shine during the second half of the season.

However, if Vancouver are to continue their impressive form, they will need to bounce back from only a fourth defeat across the 27 matches they have played this season. Despite the frustrating nature of that 2-1 defeat in Columbus, their displays across the year give me confidence that the Whitecaps are more than capable of overcoming the setback and returning to winning ways.

Following the defeat to the Crew, I anticipate that Jesper Sørensen may look to tweak his lineup, and we may see a return to the 4-3-3 set up that Vancouver started the season in.

The defence will likely consist of the tried and trusted set up of Takaoka in goal, behind Johnson, Veselinovic, Blackmon, and Laborda. Andres Cubas will presumably start in defensive midfield, although there will be a battle to start alongside him as Jeevan Badwal, Ralph Priso, J.C. Ngando and Pedro Vite have all made strong claims for the starting spots.

Ahead of them, Daniel Rios will hope to continue his hot streak up front, and he may be flanked by Emmanuel Sabbi, who is set to return to the XI following his wedding last weekend, and Edier Ocampo, who may be moved into a more advanced role to accommodate Vancouver’s current lack of available wingers.

In terms of absences, Ryan Gauld is still out injured, whilst Sam Adekugbe will miss the rest of the season after suffering an Achilles tendon tear on international duty, Ali Ahmed has also returned to Vancouver after suffering an ankle injury against Curaçao. Vancouver will also be without their trio who are still on international duty, as Berhalter, White, and Nelson are still competing at the Gold Cup.

Whilst it’s frustrating that they cannot play in the MLS for Vancouver, it has been nice to see Whitecaps players shining on the international stage. Sebastian Berhalter has been one of the standout players in MLS this season, and he continued that form for the USMNT as his inch perfect freekick delivery for Chris Richards’ winner against Saudi Arabia was exactly like the ones we have become accustomed to him delivering at BC Place. Meanwhile Ali Ahmed played a delightful through ball to assist Promise David in Canada’s 6-0 demolition of Honduras, although he then had to be substituted off 15 minutes after coming on in the 1-1 draw with Curacao because of an ankle injury which will see him miss the rest of the tournament.

Turning our attention to the visitors, and San Diego FC have been as impressive as the Whitecaps in their debut MLS campaign. Under head coach Mikey Varas, who is in his first senior management job in professional football, they have stormed the Western Conference and currently sit second in the table with the potential to leapfrog the Whitecaps with victory in this clash.

They have been in irresistible form recently, with 6 wins in their last 8 matches, including a 4-2 demolition at a Minnesota United side who sat third in the West and had been unbeaten in their previous 6 matches. However, due to their plethora of absentees, now might be the best time for Vancouver to face San Diego.

DP Hirving Lozano is still out recovering from a hamstring injury which kept him out of the Gold Cup, whilst key midfielder Luca de la Torre is competing at that tournament for the USA. With starting central defender Paddy McNair also out injured, San Diego’s depth will be exposed, and that could provide opportunities for the Whitecaps to exploit.

Of course, San Diego still have a hosts of key threats who will trouble the Whitecaps. The most prominent is tricky winger Andres Dreyer, who with 8 goals, including a sensational long-range strike against Minnesota, and 8 assists so far this season has been the standout player this season for the Californian outfit. Beyond Dreyer, striker Milan Iloski has 5 MLS goals this season and will also cause problems for Vancouver’s defenders, whilst Finnish attacking midfielder Onni Valakari provides flair to San Diego’s attack.

San Diego are a tough opponent who will punish the Whitecaps if they produce a sloppy display. However, I predict that Jesper Sørensen will set his team up to respond from their recent set back, and I imagine Vancouver will return to winning ways after a tight game.

These are my thoughts ahead of a critical match at the top of the Western Conference. As always, please leave your opinions in the comments below!

  1. It’s really frustrating that we lose Brian White to the bench in the gold cup. It would be a different story if you were actually getting minutes but we need him desperately and the US team doesn’t seem to need him at all.

  2. its hard to get excited about these games when so many quality players are missing- i am sure that many other Club supporters feel the same way- and it all rests at the feet of FIFA

i dont think we can have any idea what the Caps will do in the second half of the season- unknowns like Pedro Vite leaving in July, integrating his possible replacement (always a difficult thing to do), the return of Ryan Gauld, the form of Brian White who really hasnt had much playing time for 3 weeks, who will get us goals until he returns and how the Team will compete leading to the Playoffs- its hard for me to see them dominating like they did for the first half of the season- if they can nick a win tonight, that will be quite a statement of CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
