Post Match: Substitutes Shine in Minnesota

The Vancouver Whitecaps continued their phenomenal start to the season with a scintillating 3-1 result at Minnesota United, which was inspired by some sensational substitutions from Jesper Sørensen.

Vancouver came into this game flying, as they were 4 points clear at the top of the Western Conference and coming off the back of a sensational 2-0 victory against Inter Miami in the Champions Cup. However, Minnesota also came into this game in form, as they were unbeaten since the first match of the season and they held the home pitch advantage.

Jesper Sørensen clearly had one eye on the second leg in Miami, and he rested many key players as only Yohei Takaoka, Ranko Veselinovic, and Daniel Rios retained their places in the starting XI. There was a welcome return for Sam Adekugbe after his injury, whilst Jeevan Badwal and Guiseppe Bovalina were handed their first MLS starts of the season.

Minnesota have played about half as many matches as the Whitecaps this year, and they had the luxury of being able to retain most of their lineup, as they only made one change, with Carlos Harvey replacing Jefferson Diaz in defence.

The game started scrappily, as neither side was able to consistently retain possession. Minnesota had the first real chances of the game, but Bovalina was able to block Joaquin Pereyra’s effort after a crazy run, and the acrobatic effort from Kelvin Yeboah was comfortably held by Takaoka.

As the first half wore on, it appeared increasingly likely that the opening goal would come from a defensive mistake Takaoka was forced into some hurried clearances, and Jayden Nelson was denied the opener by a brilliant sliding tackle from Nicolas Romero, after he had intercepted the ball in the attacking third.

The score at half time was 0-0, as the Whitecaps hadn’t had a single shot on goal. Minnesota had had a few chances from set pieces, but the combined xG was 0.4, as neither side properly threatened to open the scoring.

Sørensen clearly felt that changes were needed for the Whitecaps to win, and he substituted on Sebastian Berhalter for Ralph Priso, whilst Adekugbe saw his minutes managed as he was replaced by Tate Johnson.

Those changes paid dividends for the Whitecaps, as Berhalter started to pull the strings in midfield. He slipped a through ball to Sabbi, but the winger was unable to get on the end of it. The Whitecaps recycled possession, and Berhalter rocketed a Bovalina pull back pass right into the roof of the net, making things 1-0 for Vancouver.

The Whitecaps were firmly in the ascendency, and Sørensen once again flexed the depth of his squad, as Pedro Vite was substituted on for Badwal, and Ali Ahmed came on for Nelson.

It took only three minutes for that decision to be justified, as some tidy passing saw JC Ngando loft a pass to Pedro Vite, who elegantly lifted the ball over Dayne St. Clair and into the back of the net, as Vancouver went up 2-0.

That advantage quickly became 3-0, as the substitutes yet again made the difference. Ahmed got down the left-hand side and played the ball back to Vite, who slid the ball into the far corner, beyond the reach of St. Clair.

The Whitecaps were clearly enjoying themselves in wide areas, as yet another cross created a goal scoring opportunity. This time it was Vite who played the ball in, but Sabbi’s acrobatic effort nestled just onto the roof of the net.

Minnesota did get a goal back late, as Will Trapp thundered home a header after Tani Oluwasenyi had nodded the ball across the face of goal. The game did become scrappy after that, but the Whitecaps managed the game out well.

Vancouver had a few opportunities to make it 4-1, as low crosses yet again found attackers in the box. However, Vite was denied his hat trick on the line, and Bovalina missed an attempt after getting on the end of Ahmed’s ball across.

Those misses mattered little, as Vancouver dealt with the Minnesota pressure well to earn a 3-1 victory.

In the first half, Vancouver looked less assured than in recent games, but that can largely be put down to the changes that Sørensen made. However, the substitutions that he made deserve immense credit, as the Whitecaps looked unplayable in the second half.

When Sebastian Berhalter came on he completely changed the game, as Vancouver looked more controlled and confident with him in midfield. His goals tonight and against Miami are a just reward for his phenomenal start to the season. Tate Johnson, who was also introduced at half time, followed up his exceptional display against Lionel Messi by marshalling the left side superbly, offering Minnesota very little space in attack.

Pedro Vite was the ultimate impact sub with a brace after only 6 minutes, and the midfielder took his goals excellently – too well for the Minnesota defence to handle. Ali Ahmed tore the right-hand side of Minnesota apart, and he combined excellently with JC Ngando to create frequent chances for the Whitecaps.

Once again, the Whitecaps have taken on an opponent who had previously had the best defensive record in MLS and have made them look average. To earn this victory having made 8 changes shows how impressive this squad is and how well this team has bought into Sørensen’s philosophy.

After yet another dominant display, Vancouver will head into their second leg against Miami brimming with confidence. They end the match in a fine position, as they are 8 matches unbeaten and 7 points clear at the top of the Western Conference.

Following their Champions Cup tie, their next league match is at home with Real Salt Lake next Saturday.

  1. Anyone got an actual update?….now out for over 2 months!

Captain Ryan Gauld has suffered a left knee capsule sprain and will be out of action for “a few weeks.”

  2. I don’t get to watch many games because of the time difference here in Europe, but this is the best Caps team and the best coached-Caps team I have ever seen (I only go back to Swanguard days though).

A mixture of some very talented youngsters, some players who have improved tremendously from last season, and some more than decent newcomers. But the icing on the cake is that for the first time for many years we have a top quality coach. Every player, first choice or not, knows his job within Jesper’s playing system.

We probably need a better back up to Brian White than Rios, and Taka sometimes doesn’t fill me with confidence (he was very good yesterday though), but cudos to Axel for building this squad. Its going to be an exceptional season on the evidence so far!

    1. who would have ever thought that Gauld would not be missed ? i said in February that without Ryan Gauld on the field or suffering a long-term injury, the Caps would sink in the standings

DID I EVER GET THAT WRONG !!

of course, he will be in the Team as a starter, but with far less demand on him to be EVERYTHING in order for the Team to function at a quality level- that is no longer true- he can have his rest games in a demanding schedule or if he goes to play for Scotland… and the Team will be fine- i have seen enough of the Caps to know they have the real stuff to succeed for the season

      Salty

    1. While I agree, not sure how practical it is … can you find black armbands in a few hours that would work? I actually don’t know the answer ….

      1. You’re right that it would have been short notice. Perhaps the league or the Loons could have helped them source the armbands.

  3. I was satisfied to make it to halftime with that lineup, in first place in the Supporter’s Shield, 2-0 up in the CCC semifinal. Yes, I thought to myself, these are good days.

    Then Jesper made his subs….

    1. thats all you need to say- Jesper is GOLDEN in all aspects – he read the game perfectly- one would have thought that Brian White would be the chosen sub, but it was Berhalter and Vite and the energy of Johnson and Ahmed that brought an easy second half win- now White can be well-rested for Miami and that is critical

simply amazing times- and i dont need to be pinched anymore- this Team is the real deal– when Ryan Gauld is ready, it will be interesting to see Jesper’s starting line-up

      1. RW will be an interesting decision once Gauld is back. So many options between Nelson, Sabbi, Rios, and Ahmed.

Adekugbe vs Tate and Laborda vs Ocampo will also be interesting.

So many riches to choose from!
