Match Preview: Depleted Whitecaps look to stay hot against Chicago Fire

The view from the top has been pretty nice — and the Vancouver Whitecaps look to keep the good tides rolling against Chicago Fire FC this Saturday at BC Place. But it won’t be all smooth sailing, as the Whitecaps will be severely depleted by the call-ups for the concurrent international break, on top of their existing injuries. Much has been made about Vancouver’s incredible 4-0-0 start — the first in franchise history — but Jesper Sørensen’s men will no doubt have to keep cool heads as they match up against a solid Chicago Fire lineup.

Chicago are on their last leg of a successful three game cross-continent road trip. The ‘Men in Red’ defeated last week’s Whitecap opponents FC Dallas in dramatic fashion, scoring three goals past the 82 minute mark in a 3-1 comeback a fortnight ago. They then travelled to BMO Field to dispatch FC Toronto 2-1 last Saturday, extending their season record to a respectable 2-1-1.

At the helm for Chicago is former USMNT and long-time Columbus Crew Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. After several scandals during his tenure as America’s bench boss, Berhalter was fired in the summer of 2024. However, it was a quick turnaround into his current role as he was brought in to revitalize Chicago in October at the conclusion of the last MLS season. Berhalter is the 4th Chicago coach since 2021, and the team is looking for a stabilizing force after hitting rock-bottom last season, finishing last in the East and second-last in the Supporter’s Shield.

Berhalter sets his team up in his classic 4-3-3 formation, with an emphasis on possession while on the ball and high pressing off of it. His team have had no issues scoring this season, grabbing nine goals on the year — tied for 2nd in the league and level with the Whitecaps. At the same time, defense has been a problem for the Fire as their eight goals conceded puts them joint second worst in MLS.

The high-flying offense is spearheaded by Belgian striker Hugo Cuypers, who’s in red-hot form with four goals and an assist on the season, and on a three game goal-streak. Cuypers is a relentless forward who’s foxy in the box while also capable of scoring from afar. The Whitecaps’ likely centre back duo of Blackmon and Veselinovic will have to stay on their toes both on and off the ball to keep Cuypers in check. The good news for Whitecaps fans is that Chicago’s homegrown midfielder Brian Gutierrez is away, joining Brian White with the USMNT, as the Fire deal with a hamstrung squad including six injuries, two call ups, and Chris Muller being away on personal leave. Most notable is the absence of central midfield duo Dominigue Kouamé and Kellyn Acosta via injury. Combined with the absence of Gutierrez, this leaves the Fire’s central midfielder options paper thin — next on the depth chart is 19-year old academy talent Segio Oregel.

But this doesn’t mean the team is without threats. Brand new signing Jonathan Bamba is a mercurial talent, with the Ivory Coast veteran racking up three assists since his arrival in North America from Celta Vigo in Spain. Combined with the two-way threat of left-back Andrew Gutman — who’s good for two goals of the season — the left-hand side is looking particularly threatening.

Jonathan Bamba

On the other hand, the Whitecaps will have to contend with losing much of their offensive firepower. Along with White, the ever brilliant Pedro Vite, Ali Ahmed, and Andres Cubas have been called up to their respective international teams, as the Whitecaps lose four key starters to national duty. Compounded with the absence of Ryan Gauld, Emannuel Sabbi (he might be on the bench, we will see), and Sam Adekugbe due to injury, the squad will have to show real depth and flexibility to maintain their fine form. Expect Jayden Nelson and Daniel Rios to get the nod for starting positions this weekend, with lots of mixing and matching in the attack and midfield to cope with the absentees.

Perhaps the player with most to prove this weekend will be Sebastian Berhalter, who will be facing his father for the first time in his professional career. With so many of the usual midfielders out for both teams, Berhalter — who’s eaten big minutes and impressed in them this season — will be a key facilitator for any Whitecap success. It will also be a fantastic opportunity for young players such as Ralph Priso and Whitecaps 2 call-ups to show their value for the team when they inevitably get minutes this matchday.

Sebastian Berhalter

Tactically, expect the Fire to play a hard-pressing game, but apart from that there is a lot left in the air with such high turnover amongst the 22 starters. With the Whitecaps defense untouched, they will have to step up big time to keep stability and confidence throughout the rest of the lineup. The backline must ensure they do not melt against the high scoring Chicago team and especially Cuypers. Any road to success offensively for the Caps runs through Berhalter and JC Ngando imposing themselves on the inexperienced Fire midfield, and exposing the shaky Dallas backline. A lot will also rest on the shoulders of Nelson to provide some offensive spark for the Caps. It will also be exciting to see how Rios fits into Sørensen’s plans, considering he has gotten less than ten combined MLS minutes to this point.

Ultimately, I think it’ll be a game of whoever takes their chances when they come. I optimistically predict a hard-earned 2-1 Whitecaps victory to extend the unprecedented winning streak to five.
