Guess the Starting XI – Match Seventeen at New England

Welcome back, everyone.

After a week away, the Vancouver Whitecaps return to MLS action on the East Coast this weekend against the New England Revolution.

With two straight wins before the pause, Vancouver will be eager to build on the momentum they found in the 3-5-2 system. They are facing an NE team that has been at the bottom of the table all season, although they are in their best form of the year at the moment, with two straight wins against good teams in Nashville SC, and the NY Red Bulls.

So what the heck is going on in New England? Basically, Carles Gil has been the only player the Revs have been able to rely upon with any consistency this season, and that’s just not good enough for an MLS side in 2024. Credit to goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič though, as the former Portland Timber earned Player of the Matchday honours last week after a five-save clean sheet against the Red Bulls.

In terms of the Whitecaps, players should be in good fitness after a full week off followed by a full week of training. Sam Adekugbe is still on the road to recovery, Andres Cubas is away with Paraguay and Ali Ahmed is away with Canada, but otherwise, Vanni’s options are open. I will update as anything else comes across the wire.

Ok, on to rules and standings we go.

  • Predictions will be ‘valid’ if posted HERE (or more accurately, whichever is the correct match thread) before the lineup is officially announced, usually about an hour before kickoff.
  • You receive 1 point for every player you correctly guess to be in the Starting XI. You receive 4 bonus points for correctly predicting all 11 starters.
  • You get 5 points for correctly guessing Win/Lose/Draw, this doubles to 10 if you also predict the right score-line along with the result.
  • All this means, if you correctly predict the Starting XI, Final Score, and Winner, you can earn 25 points!
  • At the end of each half of the season, the contestant’s lowest two scores (or missed predictions) of that period will be deducted from the cumulative standings.
