Coffee with the Caps, Monday April 22

Good Monday morning Caps fans, hope you all are well rested and ready for another week laid out in front of you.

I’m out of town and didn’t watch Saturday’s win over Seattle but watched the highlights and, boy, is there plenty to unpack there.

The Caps were able to coast to a win in no small part due to two sending offs for the Sounders, one of which has engendered plenty of controversy, when Jackson Regan was shown a red for a studs up challenge on Ryan Gauld.

My take is that I’d be frustrated if a Caps player got red for the same challenge but I’d also see why it happened. While it might be a bit soft, any type of studs up challenge late gets scrutiny, as Derek Jones can attest to after getting off for Columbus in an unfortunate yet possibly dangerous tackle earlier this year.

The second red, however, was ironclad and the Caps seemed to be pretty good value for the win. Seattle are down bad right now but I still expressed skepticism in the pre-match that they could take advantage because they have an abysmal record at Lumen Field (I dated myself by calling it CenturyLink). The fact that this didn’t happen speaks to the character and quality of the team (and probably also Seattle’s current state) and the win puts them in a good position in Cascadia and will give confidence ahead of their second trip to Seattle in less than a month.

  1. I have to admit that the replays they showed of the first red card made me think Seattle was hard done by but the Instant Replay segment on the MLS website showed more angles. Looked pretty intentional from those angles so that might put some of the debate to bed. Definitely a red.
