Good Friday morning Caps fans, hope you all are having a lovely start to your October and that you have a great fall weekend upcoming.
The Vancouver Whitecaps are champions of Canada. It might not be headline news anymore but it certainly doesn’t get old saying that (four times in a row to boot). The Caps never really needed to get out of second gear to beat Vancouver FC 4-2 in the most drama free of their four straight Voyageurs Cups.
This isn’t to say Vancouver FC didn’t make a good account of themselves, putting up two well taken goals and fighting until the very end. But the talent gap here was clear and credit to the Caps for scoring early and often to make sure that the away side never got too much belief.
Ali Ahmed was the standout on the night, causing near constant problems and really starting to maximize his relationship with Thomas Mueller. His two goals (and indirect assist by winning the penalty) were well deserved. But the feel good moment was the return of Ryan Gauld, who bagged a goal during his 10 minute cameo at the end, putting a bow on things and making it pretty much a perfect night for the Whitecaps.
This was the Whitecaps tournament to lose when it started, particularly when Toronto and Montreal met in the first round. But you still have to close things out and this side deserves credit for doing so. Their four-peat is more impressive than Toronto’s and they will be favorites to make it an unprecedented five-peat next season. And regardless of what happens in the regular season, the Caps have now earned a chance at CCC redemption, something they will surely relish.
The win in the Canadian Championship once again had the upside of exposing a large group of fans to success and providing a strong incentive to come back for the MLS Cup playoffs, when the Caps will hope to make a deep run in a much tougher knockout competition. And, ultimately, you play this sport to win trophies. Two trophies in a week is nothing to sneeze at. Jesper Sorensen and Co. added one more memorable moment from to an already long list of them — it will be exciting to see what gets cooked up next.

Best of the Rest
Credit to Thomas Mueller, who became the most decorated German player ever on Wednesday night thanks to a competition he probably didn’t know existed two months ago.
The Whitecaps 2 did not fare quite so well on Wednesday night, losing to The Town, but their playoff spot has still been clinched.
Ali Ahmed and Jayden Nelson have been called up for October friendlies — good for them, bad for the Whitecaps.
What to watch for in the final three weeks of the MLS regular season.

need some info:
both Ahmed and Berhalter- both having tremendous, impactful years- are on Pending Options- which means the Club needs to give them a Bona Fide Offer-
from MLS Rules- Clubs must exercise the option for, or extend a Bona Fide Offer (i.e., $15,000 increase or 10% increase in salary over his prior year’s salary)
have i got this right ?
i guess that a Club can sell the player to another Club (ie in Europe) and make some cash; certainly- and if we listen to rumors- Ahmed might want to move to Europe and i have no idea about Berhalter
Axel’s signing of Kenji Cabrera, an attack-minded MF- makes sense as a replacement for Ahmed should Ali not sign an Option contract- because he is 24, it makes sense to go next year- waiting any longer isnt an option, IMO
