Good Friday morning Caps fans, hope you all are having a good week and that you have a nice little break in store this weekend.
Well, we’re entering the post-Vite era of Vancouver, with the Ecuadorian set to move to Pumas in Liga MX for a reported fee of $7 million. This is one I don’t think I will ever understand. OK, well, I do understand it from a financial perspective. And hey, I don’t blame Pedro. He has been one of the league’s best players and deserves to be paid like it and I would assume Pumas is going to make that happen.
It is a tough break for Vancouver, who helped develop Vite and weathered some inconsistent years, only to see him leave after a half season of elite play. While the Caps could add a third DP to accommodate Vite, we know that wouldn’t happen. I have long wished for MLS to allow teams to convert their U-22 spots into DP spots in order to keep players like Pedro in MLS (instead of Liga MX). Obviously that isn’t a thing and Vancouver would probably not look to maximize that roster mechanism either. But a guy can dream.
Vancouver is already reportedly about to lock in a new signing to come in as Vite leaves. Kenji Cabrera, a 22 year old Peruvian plying his trade for FBC Melgar, appears set to arrive for a $1.2 million fee, per Manuel Veth (echoing reports from Peruvian reporter David Chavez). I think it is unfair to expect Cabrera to be the Vite replacement, though there are some similarities between the two. Instead, one hopes the Caps will use their now ample cap flexibility to add another high level attacking piece to buy Cabrera some time to develop.
Nonetheless, Cabrera is a pretty exciting prospect. Social media folks who know WAY more about the Peruvian top flight than I do have said he is one of the top prospects in the league and he earned 14 U-20 call ups for the Peruvian youth national team.
Cabrera nabbed 6 goals and an assist in 15 appearances in the Apertura and he was also one of the top performers in Melgar’s Copa Sudamerica run. Overall, in 2025, he has had 13 goal involvements and has been one of Melgar’s top players. He had 10 goal involvements in 2024, so he is clearly on an upward trajectory.
It sounds like Cabrera can play on the left side, either as a winger or a central midfielder (sound familiar) but can cut inside and cause problems. That’s a profile that works very well with what the Caps are trying to do. All in all, this seems like an excellent roll of the dice (which, lets face it, is what every U-22 signing is) and a guy who can provide some meaningful contribution sooner rather than later.
The Caps opened the post-Vite era with a performance reminiscent of the early stages of this season, smoking Houston 3-0 in a Jesper Sorensen masterclass. A tweak to a 5-2-3 formation caught the Dynamo off guard and gave Edier Ocampo and Emmanuel Sabbi acres of space to work with and torment the Houston backline. Brian White returned with a goal and an assist and the backline and midfield were solid, with Ralph Priso and Mathias Laborda the standouts.
A date with San Diego FC is another degree of difficulty, though they recently cut loose Whitecaps slayer Milan Iloski ahead of the return fixture on Saturday. San Diego lost to Toronto on Wednesday, giving the Caps a chance to climb above them on Saturday into first place in the West. This team showed a lot of grit and fire in the belly on Wednesday. Let’s hope they saved some of that for the weekend.
Shameless Self Promotion
Caleb has some thoughts on sensible transfers to serve as Vite’s replacement. And we have the breakdown on what Sorensen got right on Wednesday in Houston.
Best of the Rest
The Whitecaps 2 side continue to roll, cruising past Houston Dynamo 2 in a 4-2 win on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Whitecaps U16 star Tyler Brown nabbed a major award — the future is bright!
So its chill to have 4 DPs now? That’s nice I guess if you’re Inter Miami.
A look at what Vancouver has agreed to do in exchange for hosting the World Cup next year.

Vite has always wanted to play in Latin America. You can’t keep a player away from their dreams. I think this will actually help Axel recruit players as VWFC is a player friendly club and we have to compete having a less than average payroll. VWFC has to be a “development” club due to the small market. Find young players, develop them, sell them. Use those funds for DPs and to keep the “core” in tact. It does sting given the depleted roster with injuries. However, just like we saw Berhalter step up with Gauld out, it seems Sabbi is ready to step up with Vite gone.
