Coffee with the Caps, Monday June 16

Good Monday morning Caps fans, hope you all had a glorious summer weekend and that the start of your week is a good one.

Well, all good things must end and that includes the Whitecaps’ team record unbeaten run, which was halted at the hands of the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.

The Caps were bound to feel the lack of depth (in addition to the Gold Cup absentees, Emmanuel Sabbi was off getting married — congrats!) and this was one where the absences were pretty noticable. In addition, we saw Tristan Blackmon make a very un-Tristan Blackmon mistake to gift Diego Rossi Columbus’ second, something which is unlikely to repeat itself.

There were positives. Pedro Vite seemed to return to form, even without Sebastian Berhalter by his side. Mathias Laborda had a well taken assist and Daniel Rios a well taken goal. Rios getting on the score sheet in back to back games is particularly encouraging given that he will have to lead the line for awhile yet before Brian White returns. Many of us (me) thought Rios would grow and flourish in Vancouver and hopefully we’re seeing the start of that. Two goals and two assists in league play doesn’t have him on pace to better his seasons with Atlanta (10/4) and Charlotte (9/1) but he will have plenty of chances to increase his haul. And Vancouver doesn’t need him to set a career high, just as long as he can effectively press, hold up play and lead the line until Brian White can return. Vancouver has shown plenty of other guys are capable of scoring goals.

All in all, there aren’t any grand takeaways for the Caps from this one. This wasn’t a terrible time to catch Columbus given their own absences but the Crew are a tough out at home and dropping points to them is certainly not anything to be ashamed of. Vancouver gets a well earned rest before hosting San Diego on June 25. That should give them time to get healthy and rested (and, it can’t be ruled out, for the US to get knocked out of the Gold Cup).

Shameless Self Promotion

We break down what went wrong for the Caps in Saturday’s match and recap where things stand in the Canadian Premier League.

Best of the Rest

Wilfied Nancy can commiserate with Vancouver’s CONCACAF Champions Cup final experience.

Both Seattle and Miami made a go of things but couldn’t quite get the job done in their Club World Cup openers (a loss for Seattle and a draw for Inter Miami). What does it all mean for MLS?

Amid chaos in the U.S. camp, there is no doubt Canada is locked in for the Gold Cup.

Sam Adekugbe’s season ending injury was nearly averted, Jesse Marsch said.
