Match Preview: Whitecaps welcome LA Galaxy for Home Opener

Sunday afternoon at BC Place, the Vancouver Whitecaps will take on the defending MLS Cup Champions LA Galaxy in Vancouver’s MLS home opener.

The Whitecaps are following up a 2-0 win over Deportivo Saprissa on Thursday, as well as a 4-1 drubbing of the Portland Timbers down at Providence Park last weekend.

While this is a very condensed portion of the schedule for the Whitecaps, Jesper Sørensen was able to provide some rest for stars Ryan Gauld and Andres Cubas on Thursday night, as neither of them were in the starting XI, so it is clear that the Danish manager always had an eye on this fixture against the Galaxy.

Despite their 2024 successes, it’s not been a great start to 2025 for the Galaxy. Riqui Puig will be out most of the season as he recovers from a ligament tear he suffered in last season’s playoffs, while Joseph Paintsil has also been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Additionally, Dejan Joveljić was moved to Sporting KC to become their latest designated player.

With these three stars not at the Galaxy’s disposal, a huge amount of pressure falls on Gabriel Pec, who last year thrived as part of the Galaxy’s four-headed attacking monster. Pec had 16 goals and 14 assists in 2024, but he will have to prove he can reproduce those totals with less support if the Galaxy are going to be successful early on this season.

The Galaxy struggled in their MLS season opener against San Diego, losing 2-0 to the MLS newcomers in a match that, to be fair, was much closer than the scoreline indicated. Nonetheless, without the same game-breaking quality in the lineup, a lot more pressure will be placed on the Galaxy’s defensive unit, which historically has struggled.

One position of interest in the opener for the Galaxy was between the sticks, where young Serbian keeper Novak Mićović has overtaken MLS veteran John McCarthy. Mićović made a crucial error that led to San Diego’s opening goal in that match, but he also made a great 1v1 save against Chucky Lozano, so I think it’s fair to say that Greg Vanney is betting on the upside of the young keeper, and is perhaps willing to live through some growing pains along the way. In two previous seasons in LA, Mićović has only played four MLS matches, allowing 8 goals.

At the striker position, the Galaxy have replaced Joveljić with Christian Ramírez from the Columbus Crew. While Ramírez has been a solid player for many years in MLS, you have to go back to 2017 in Minnesota to find the last time he eclipsed 10 goals in a season, so it will be interesting to see if he can rediscover past form in LA.

In the midfield, the Galaxy moved on from veteran Gastón Brugman, who is now with Nashville SC. In the opener, the Galaxy rolled out a very young midfield double pivot of Edwin Cerrillo (24), and MLS newcomer Lucas Sanabria (21), who only recently joined the Galaxy from Uruguayan side Nacional on a U-22 contract. Given this, I would expect the Whitecaps to target the midfield as an area where they can aim to take control of the match. Jesper Sørensen noted that both teams like the hold the ball, and as such, winning the midfield battle could be crucial to the final result at the end of 90+ minutes.

Flipping the focus to Vancouver, I think it is safe to say that Ryan Gauld, Andres Cubas, and Ranko Veselinovic will all be in the Starting XI. Overall, I don’t imagine Sørensen will deviate much from the lineup we saw in Portland last weekend, perhaps except for a change at fullback, or with Ali Ahmed swapping for Jayden Nelson.

If the Whitecaps can continue to expose wide areas with the pace of their wingers, creating space for White and Gauld in the box, then I think the Whitecaps can have success against this Galaxy team. Especially as they are catching LAG in a moment where injury and roster turnover could very easily lead to them being slow out of the gates.

That being said, the Whitecaps will have to remain disciplined in their tactics, as the likes of Marco Reus and Diego Fagúndez can still give the Whitecaps headaches if those players are afforded ample opportunity.

All things considered, I think that the Whitecaps will continue their positive start to the season with a home win, so I will predict a final score of 2-1 in favour of the Whitecaps.
