Coffee with the Caps, Friday April 5

Good Friday morning Caps fans, hope your April is off to a good start and you haven’t been getting slammed with rain in your neck of the woods — just remember the May flowers that will come.

No news is good news for the Caps ahead of an inter-Canada derby against Toronto FC on Saturday. I got into this more in my match preview but TFC have been off to a fine start and will, unfortunately, be a formidable opponent, though the injury to Lorenzo Insigne will complicate things for them.

Indeed, I’m starting to become bullish on all three Canadian teams, with CF Montreal seeming to fit the “plucky, fun team that scores a lot, concedes a lot and sneaks into the playoffs” category. Their win over Inter Miami a few weeks back was scintillating television and will be a tough out in the Canadian Championship, if they can sneak by Toronto.

The Caps were handed a boost, with Brian White back in training and completing the final portions of the concussion protocol ahead of Saturday’s match. This isn’t a guarantee that he makes it into the starting lineup or even is on the bench on Saturday and with a head injury, caution is important.

But White seems in a good place and avoiding a long-term miss is key, with the Caps’ options behind him uncertain. Damir Kreilach is not quite as mobile and not as neat of a fit and Levonte Johnson remains raw and unproven. The notion of inserting White into the Ryan Gauld/Fafa Picault front three, letting them cook with Ali Ahmed, and letting them loose at BC Place? That sounds pretty fun to me and, against a defensively stout Toronto team, might be what can help pick the lock and turn things in Vancouver’s favor.]
