Guess the Starting XI – Match Fourteen vs. Inter Miami

Welcome back, everyone.

Well, after some drama late in the week, it looks like the Vancouver Whitecaps have caught a break, as they will avoid Lionel Messi and friends this Saturday night at BC Place. It’s obviously a hugely disappointing revelation for those who were planning on attending the match with those players in mind, but for a team that has been slumping, especially at home, it could just be the break the Whitecaps need to get their season back on track.

In more good news for Vancouver, Andres Cubas and Damir Kreilach were back at training on Thursday. While I could see Cubas going right back into the lineup, I have to imagine Kreilach would come off the bench at least once or twice before he would be an option for the starting XI again. Sam Adekugbe, meanwhile, is still out.

Alright, on to rules and standings we go…

  • Predictions will be ‘valid’ if posted HERE (or more accurately, whichever is the correct match thread) before the lineup is officially announced, usually about an hour before kickoff.
  • You receive 1 point for every player you correctly guess to be in the Starting XI. You receive 4 bonus points for correctly predicting all 11 starters.
  • You get 5 points for correctly guessing Win/Lose/Draw, this doubles to 10 if you also predict the right score-line along with the result.
  • All this means, if you correctly predict the Starting XI, Final Score, and Winner, you can earn 25 points!
  • At the end of each half of the season, the contestant’s lowest two scores (or missed predictions) of that period will be deducted from the cumulative standings.

If we dont win this, I think theres a good chance this season is a write off if we cant beat a one man show – Gressel – the real goat.

Ive noticed we purposely play without urgency. I think this is really good. Its very Italian and I hate it, but its a mature move and shows top quality. Unfortunately, its bad for fans who goals. It should bring more wins our way, but at the cost of excitement. Im reminded of the glory days of the canucks with an early Vignault where we would win a lot, but it was a pain to watch. Instead, we get a team that could play professionally in Italy. Cant say if the last time I saw a Serie A game was 10 years or 12 years ago lol.

  3. 2-1 Whitecaps

    Takaoka
    Bovalina Veselinovic Utvik
    Raposo Schopf Cubas Ahmed
    Gauld White Picault

Miami’s defence is … not good so the Caps’ probability of winning has gone up! Taking a wild stab at the back three because that’s what I’d like to see BWAHHAA (although I still like the back three he had for Cavalry) Not even sure Cubas is fully fit to be starting but we’ll see!

  4. Dirqx piqx for starting XI for game XIV vs Stupid Miami nobodies and no-shows and earmunchers and former Whitecap Julian Gressels and the rest of the overpaid pink herons even though herons are not pink and flamingoes are

2 1 Caps win cuz I’m an optimistic fool

  7. AtlantisB

    Takaoka
    Utvik, Ranko, Blackmon
    Schopf, Cubas, Vite, Ahmed
    Fafa, White, Gauld

Long losing streak, big crowd, no Messi to ramp up intensity. Could all be recipe for loss, but I am going to be more optimistic. Gut says win, but I will listen to my brain (which hasn’t worked well this season) and say:

    Vancouver 1:1 Miami

  8. Fafa-White-Gauld
    Ahmed-Cubas-Vite-Schöpf
    Utvik-Veselinovic-Blackmon
    Takaoka

I had to work so much I missed the last couple!
I’mg going with a 3-1 win for the Caps. Please!

  9. Picault-White-Gauld [i.e. Scottish Messi]
    Ahmed-Cubas-Vite-Schöpf
    Utvik-Veselinovic-Blackmon
    Takaoka

2 Miami, Caps 1 I’m actually happy they have a chance now. I’m hoping for a big night from the Scottish Messi!

  10. Picault-White-Gauld
    Ahmed-Cubas-Vite-Schöpf
    Utvik-Veselinovic-Blackmon
    Takaoka

3 Miami, Caps 1 (fingers crossed that I’m wrong)

  11. Picault-White-Gauld
    Raposo-Cubas-Vite-Schopf
    Utvik-Veselinovic-Blackmon
    Takaoka

Either the boys will start out super flat and we’ll lose, or they’ll come out all guns blazing and we’ll win by 3 or 4. I don’t have a lot of faith in our player’s mentality right now given our poor form.

    Whitecaps 1-3 Miami

  12. 3-1 Caps

    Gauld White Picault
    Ahmed Cubas Vite Schopf
    Blackmon Ranko Utvik
    Takaoka

I’ve been taking the strategy this year of guessing losses so that if the game goes poorly at least I gain points in an online competition, but the ‘Caps absolutely need to show up today. The slump + losing to a CPL team + being spurned by Messi & co. is about all that new fans will be able to take. It’s been great to see attendance up this year, but a poor performance tonight in front of the biggest home crowd ever could be really harmful for growing the sport in our city.

  13. Takaoka
    Laborda Veselinovic Utvik
    Ahmed Vite Cubas Schopf
    Gauld White Picault

    3-1 ‘Caps win

  14. I am thinking the Caps come out fired up for this one after a woeful midweek performance, or at least I really hope they do! Lets give the crowd something to cheer for:
    Caps 3-2
    Takaoka
    Utvick Ranko Blackmon
    Raposo Vite Cubas Ahmed
    Gauld White Fafa
